When the Golden Tap Awards asked Ontario brewers to name their favourite beer, Sawdust City came out on top each of the past two years. In other words, the Cottage Country crew is making the beer others in the craft industry aspire to.
From its base in Gravenhurst, the close-knit, Sawdust City team creates a range of award winning styles, from easy drinking Lagers to big Imperial Stouts. But despite the diligence required to execute outstanding recipes with exacting consistency, Brew Master and Co-Founder Sam Corbeil insists the team is a playful bunch. “We certainly take our beer seriously, but everything else is all about the fun!”
For Corbeil, that includes lacing up and hitting the local trails. An avid runner himself, he’s taken part in a number of lively RunTOBeer events here in Ontario, as well as this year’s International Beer Run at the Craft Brewers Conference in Philadelphia. “Whenever there is a chance to have Sawdust City as part of an event that brings together beer and running, we do our best to take part. We feel that running, like beer, can bring people together. It’s a wonderful way to meet like minded folks and a fun way to unwind.”
“When we first heard about the Famous Canadian Beer Run, it sounded like an event that we definitely wanted to be a part of. We love beer, we love food and we love to get outside and enjoy a nice relaxing run by the lake. And it just so happens that running usually leads to thirst and hunger… which coincidentally leads back to beer and food. It’s a vicious, lovely circle, and one we happily get caught up in.”
Two weeks after the Famous Canadian Beer Run, Sawdust City will be hosting its own fun run as part of its Oktoberfest celebration in Muskoka. Corbeil and company are encouraging the rest of the province to join them October 2nd for Polka, pretzels and (of course) outstanding craft beer. More details will appear soon at www.sawdustcitybrewing.com.
First though, come check out their booth at the Famous Canadian Beer Run, where Little Norway Pale Lager (a Gold Medal winner at this year’s U.S Open Beer Championship), Coriolis Effect Berliner Weiss, Golden Beach Pale Ale and Bitter Beauty IIPA (brewed in collaboration with Canadian singer songwriter, Jason Collett) will all be at the ready to slake your well-earned thirst.
